The boxing championship of Kazakhstan, which began on December 18 in Karaganda, sparked a mild wave of discontent by the second day. As expected, alongside the ordinary fans, sports experts are closely watching the serious confrontations in the ring. One of them is sports doctor Asiya Zhiyengazina from Almaty, representing the National Center for Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.
On December 19, she pointed out the informational and visual discrepancies in the broadcasts of men's and women's fights. According to her, while the broadcasts of men's fights display the boxers' last names, round numbers, and time on screen, this information is completely absent during women's matches.
Furthermore, as the doctor notes, it is challenging to identify the female athletes during their bouts. This is because the cameraman does not use the zoom function to capture close-ups of the athletes. She raised her concerns with the captain of the Kazakhstan women's boxing team, Nazym Kyzaybay. To be fair, it is worth noting the prompt feedback and courage in her personal convictions from the bronze medalist of the Paris Olympic Games.
But that's not all. Asiya Nurzhanovna's constructive criticism was echoed by several ordinary fans. Online, there have been complaints regarding the minimal representation of photos and videos of women's fights on the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation's Instagram page. For instance, out of 13 pairs participating on the second day, videos were only posted for two pairs. One of them was Zharas Serik and Azhar Tashkenbai.
According to the fans, if it is not possible to show all pairs, then clips featuring them could be compiled into a single video. They believe that increased attention to the female athletes would help boost their motivation.
"Indeed, women's boxing is not considered an aesthetic sport, but it is incredibly spectacular. We believe that all shortcomings will be addressed soon," commented male observers.
